Nigeria will soon add three more modular refineries to its oil refinery inventory.
The three modular refineries are; Niger Delta Petroleum Resources modular refinery in Niger Delta Petroleum Resources modular refinery in Ogbele,Ahoada in Rivers State, Opac modular refinery,Kwalle in Delta State and Waltersmith refinery,Ohaji/Egbema in Imo State.
In 2018, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation approved licenses for 13 modular refineries. According to the then Group Managing Director of the corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru, 35 expressions of interest for the establishment of modular refineries were declared but only 13 were issued licenses by the Department of Petroleum Resources [DPR].
A modular petroleum refinery is a process plant for refining crude oil that is engineered and constructed on largely skid-mounted structures.
Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Ltd, Rivers State, kicked off in 2011,as a 1,000 barrels per day modular refinery.
It has been the only operational modular refinery in Nigeria for several years now and has now added 5,000 barrels per day .
